Texting potential for shift work

Mobile marketing company Run the Red says a new texting service it developed for the Hurricanes Super 14 rugby team has potential to ease the organizational headaches of shift work.

Run the Red’s Mobile Team Alert was developed with vodafone when the Hurricanes’ team manager Tony Ward wanted a solution to contact players en masse.

Mr Ward said using the service this season allowed him to contact the players 249 times without playing phone tag.

Run The Red marketing director Ben Northrop said the potential for that was not rocket science and was something that "should have been done ages ago".

"The boys have loved the service because it is so easy and convenient – there are no excuses for not knowing their daily programme," he said.

Run the Red chief executive Ben Northrop said the team alert service differs from a simple group text system as it creates a two-way system using online schedules.

So for the Hurricanes, the coach could send out updates to players, while players could text in if they’d forgotten when their training was on a particular day.

New Zealand-owned Run the Red previously focused on mobile marketing services but Mr Northrop said they are keen to expand into the personnel field.

Mr Northrop says the service could be used for shift workers and help to cut down on the time and expense spent by companies fielding questions and calls from staff for updates about their schedules.

Texting was “a common denominator solution,” he said, and was easy to measure for its use and return on investment.

Vodafone NZ head of sponsorship Richard Howarth said the company was looking to roll out the system across its other sporting sponsorships.
The new “bounce back” system could also be used at events or for sporting fans to text in for updates, he said.
